| Not so long ago, Mary Curtin and Don May remember looking into their backyard in Washington D.C. and seeing nothing but a heavy blanket of snow and ice. Now when Mary and Don look outside their back door, it’s a completely different picture. The sun is shining, the sky is a bright cobalt blue, and dolphins and manatees are gliding through azure waters. The Sun Coast
Aside from the perennial sunshine and resort lifestyle, Mary and Don love the sense of belonging they get from living along these barrier islands—better known as the Sun Coast. It’s the kind of place where people are genuinely friendly and watch out for one another. Although many who come here are considered ‘snow birds,’ Mary and Don say the level of community involvement couldn’t be stronger, be it at a town hall meeting or a Christmas tree lighting.
Special Forces
As natives who have both lived and worked in Washington D.C., it’s easy to understand why these consummate professionals were drawn to sunny Florida. After Mary became an analyst for the Department of Defense, she earned her master’s degree in information warfare and strategy. Over the next 20 years, Mary’s tenacity and drive made a definite contribution to her role as a high-level manager supporting military operations for Special Forces.
Don flew helicopters as a combat pilot and enjoyed both the challenge and the experience. After his military tenure, Don returned home and under the guidance of his parents—both of whom were in real estate—purchased his first investment property. The move sparked his initial interest in the real estate industry, which is where Don has thrived as a successful professional for more than three decades.
